The Northwest Territories Lawyers Professional Development system is purpose-built for lawyers practising in the NWT, offering a structured and efficient means of managing ongoing professional growth. It fosters accountability and public confidence through measurable development compliance.
A clear dashboard provides visual summaries via charts, performance indicators, and activity logs. This empowers lawyers to track achievement, pinpoint areas needing attention, and see precisely where their CPD efforts have been focused. The platform supports submission and tracking of CPD activities, access to specialised resources like cultural competency training, and the creation of development plans for continual learning.
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Under the Law Society's rules, members must complete a minimum of 12 hours of CPD each membership year (April 1 to March 31), with at least 2 hours dedicated to legal ethics or law practice management.
Acceptable CPD activities include:
- Attending real-time courses (online or in person) that allow interaction (e.g., Q&A)
- Reviewing recorded sessions such as those on the Law Society’s YouTube channel
- Participating in Law Society or Canadian Bar Association section meetings or educational programs
- Engaging in study groups or collaborative learning settings
- Teaching legal education (first occurrence within the year)
