About Lawyers - Canada - Nunavut professional development

The Nunavut Lawyers Professional Development System is specifically tailored to support legal professionals operating in Nunavut. It offers a streamlined framework for managing mandatory continuing education, ensuring both public confidence and professional integrity.

Lawyers access a transparent dashboard to record CLE activities, track compliance, and submit annual reports. The system emphasises mandatory learning needs while providing flexibility through varied formats and thoughtful administration.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Under the Law Society of Nunavut’s rules, all practising members must complete 12 hours of eligible Continuing Legal Education (CLE) each calendar year, which must include:

  • 1 hour dedicated to professional responsibility and ethics, and
  • 1 hour focused on cultural competency.

Pro-rated Requirements for Partial-Year Memberships

  • Lawyers active for less than 12 months must complete 1 hour per full or partial month.
  • Those newly admitted are exempt from reporting in the admission year, with requirements beginning in the following full calendar year.
  • Exemptions are granted for circumstances such as full-year inactivity, leave due to illness, or other approved reasons. These must be indicated in the online CLE report.

REPORTING DETAILS
Lawyers self-report their CLE hours through an Online CLE Report accessed via their member account during the annual licence renewal. Reporting is due by January 31st each year. The report must include:

  • Activity title and description
  • Role (e.g. attendee, presenter)
  • Date and provider details
  • Number of hours
  • CLE category (e.g., ethics, cultural competency)

ELIGIBLE ACTIVITIES & CONTENT
Approved CLE activities must offer meaningful and substantive content for professional development — including ethics, cultural awareness, language training, practice management, wellness, and client relations.

Self-study (e.g., recorded sessions, podcasts, legal writing) may be counted but is generally limited in how many hours it can contribute. Teaching or speaking may accrue CLE credits at an enhanced ratio (e.g., 1 hour of teaching = 2 CLE hours).
