About Lawyers - Canada - Ontario professional development

The Ontario Lawyers Professional Development System is tailored for legal professionals governed by the Law Society of Ontario. It provides a highly structured way to document and manage Continuing Professional Development (CPD), helping lawyers meet both ethical standards and competence expectations.

The platform includes a user-friendly dashboard with visual charts, detailed logs, and performance metrics to help users monitor progress, spot shortfalls, and track development activity efficiently. It supports logging CPD activities, accessing accredited programs, maintaining progress toward targets, and reviewing historical records with ease.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

  • Annual Requirement: Lawyers and paralegals must complete 12 CPD hours per calendar year, consisting of at least 3 Professionalism Hours and up to 9 Substantive Hours.
  • Professionalism Hours: Must include topics related to ethics, professional responsibility, and practice management. Among these, 1 hour per year must focus on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI).
  • Accreditation: Professionalism Hours (including EDI) must be through Law Society–accredited programs. Substantive Hours do not require accreditation but must be relevant to legal practice or professional development.
  • Pro-rated Requirement: For those who commence or resume practice mid-year, the system pro-rates CPD: lawyers must complete 1 hour of CPD per month or partial month in practice, which includes 45 minutes of Substantive and 15 minutes of Professionalism, with 5 minutes earmarked for EDI.

REPORTING & EXCESS HOURS

  • CPD Hours must be reported by March 31 of the following year. For example, 2024’s CPD must be completed by December 31, 2024, and reported by March 31, 2025.
  • Reporting in excess:
  • Extra EDI or Professionalism hours automatically count toward Substantive hours.
  • Additional Substantive hours cannot be applied to Professionalism or carried over to the next year.
