About Lawyers - Canada - Saskatchewan professional development

The Saskatchewan Lawyers Professional Development System is tailored for legal professionals regulated by the Law Society of Saskatchewan. It offers a clear and reliable framework for recording and managing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), ensuring compliance while promoting professional competence and ethical practice.

A streamlined dashboard enables users to register their training hours, track progress, and generate compliance summaries. The platform also supports planning, tracking exemptions, and acts as a central hub for all training-related documentation.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

  • CPD Requirement: All active members must complete and report 12 hours of qualifying CPD annually, including at least 2 hours in ethics-related topics such as professional responsibility, ethics, practice standards, the Code of Professional Conduct, conflict of interest, rules of the Law Society, client care and relations, and practice management.
  • Accreditation Update: Effective January 1, 2024, the requirement to submit CPD activities for approval by the Law Society was discontinued. Members are now free to choose learning activities that suit their circumstances, subject to meeting the CPD criteria.
  • Reporting: Members are only entitled to report the actual number of hours attended or participated in the CPD activity. The Law Society conducts random audits to monitor compliance.
  • Remedial CPD Plan: If a member will not complete the Minimum CPD Requirements prior to the end of the term (December 31st), they may submit a Remedial CPD Plan, along with the prescribed fee, for review and approval by the Director of Admissions & Education. All remedial CPD activities must be completed by April 1st of the following year.

REVIEW

The Saskatchewan PD system offers a flexible and self-directed approach to continuing professional development. By requiring 12 hours of CPD annually, including a focus on ethics-related topics, it ensures legal practitioners maintain and enhance their professional competence. The discontinuation of the accreditation requirement allows members to select learning activities that best fit their needs, while still adhering to the established CPD criteria.
