About Physiotherapy NZ professional development

The Physiotherapy Continuing Professional Development System has been carefully tailored to suit the high standards of registered Physiotherapists across Aotearoa New Zealand.

To practice legally in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC). While the Board does not require you to submit your CPD log annually, maintaining a rigorous, up-to-date record is a professional requirement and your absolute safety net should you be selected for a random Recertification Programme Audit.

This CPD system is a powerful tool that equips you with a simple, stress-free pathway to meeting your 3-year, 100-hour practice thresholds. Equally important, it is designed to cultivate lifelong professionalism and strategic career growth.

Your Compliance Dashboard
The intuitive user dashboard presents clean charts, data tables, and automated KPIs that instantly summarise your logged hours. This gives you clear, real-time direction on your progress toward your triennial targets, highlighting exactly where your energy has been spent and where your gaps lie.

Integrated Annual Planning & Reflections
Behind the dashboard is a rich environment where you can seamlessly log completed activities, store evidence, and discover new resources.
Crucially, the system features a built-in Annual Professional Development Plan (PDP) tool. You can use this dedicated planning tool to outline your yearly clinical goals, collaborate with your peer reviewer, and directly draft your mandatory written reflections (including your annual Māori Cultural Safety reflection). By anchoring your reflections directly to your annual plan, you create a robust, cohesive learning narrative.

System Summary
To keep tracking straightforward, this system operates on a simple 1 hour of learning = 1 point ratio. When audit season arrives, there is no need to panic—you can instantly export clean, professional transcripts of your activities, PDPs, and reflections that align perfectly with the Board’s auditing expectations.

Drive Your Career Forward
Within the guidance and support framework encapsulated by this system, it remains the responsibility of each physiotherapist to drive their own path. These tools are your ultimate asset to stay compliant, stay inspired, and elevate your practice.

Areas of Competency

The following is a copy of the framework set out by: Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand

Area of Practise

Clinical skills, research, and technical development specific to your physiotherapy role.

This category captures your core professional development as a clinician. It includes any learning directly relevant to your daily scope of practice, patient demographics, or specialty. Valid activities include attending hands-on clinical courses, participating in webinars, reading peer-reviewed journal articles, attending hospital grand rounds, or practicing specific manual and exercise techniques. Use this space to track the hours spent keeping your clinical competencies sharp and evidence-based.

Māori Cultural Safety

Developing cultural competency, health equity, and honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

The Physiotherapy Board requires active engagement with Māori cultural safety to address health inequities and fulfill Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations. Hours logged here should reflect dedicated learning about Māori health models (such as Te Whare Tapa Whā), tikanga, te reo, or historical impacts on health outcomes. Activities can include formal Mauriora modules, cultural workshops, policy readings, or community engagement.

Note: The Board requires at least one written reflective statement on this topic annually; use tis category to track your logged hours and ensure your annual plans are updated to include your reflective statement.

Cultural, Ethical & Professional

Code of conduct reviews, broader cultural competence, and peer-to-peer professional development.
  • This category focuses on the non-clinical pillars of being a registered professional. It covers your legal, ethical, and multi-cultural responsibilities. Log hours spent reviewing the Aotearoa Physiotherapy Code of Ethics, navigating informed consent and boundary issues, exploring diversity/inclusion for other minority groups, or participating in formal peer reviews and professional development planning (PDP).

Note: The Board requires at least two written reflections across these categories annually; ensure your logged time includes deeper processing of these experiences. Please ensure your annual plans are updated to include these reflections.
