The Experts Corner

In this edition, PD expert Sanjay Dayal draws on years of hands-on experience building PD frameworks across diverse professions to reveal what really makes a system succeed.

Sanjay is part of the PD able team and specialises in building PD systems for organisations across the globe.

Over the past decade, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work behind the scenes of professional development (PD) systems across a surprisingly wide range of industries, from teachers and lawyers to architects, engineers, plumbers, and electricians.

I’ve watched governing bodies roll out brilliant frameworks with the best intentions; deep learning categories, robust competency requirements, ethics expectations, sometimes even beautiful paper-based handbooks. But when the system isn’t easy for professionals to follow, participation plummets.

Not because people don’t want to be good at what they do. But because the process becomes too confusing, too fragmented, or too time-consuming. And when uptake is low, regulatory bodies lose the ability to ensure their profession is moving forward.

It becomes extremely hard to enforce standards, hard to audit, and nearly impossible to prove whether practitioners are actually keeping pace with industry expectations.

Clarity

The highest-performing PD systems all share one trait: clarity

Across every profession I’ve worked with, the successful frameworks boil down to one thing:

Clear, simple, easy-to-understand point targets.

Not complex matrices. Not multi-page spreadsheets. Just straight-forward annual expectations like:

➡️ 10 points in Design

➡️ 10 points in Project Management

➡️ 10 points in Competence

➡️ 2 points in Ethics

✅ Professionals understand it immediately.

✅ Regulators can explain it easily.

✅ Employers can adopt it without pushback.

When the rules are clear, participation skyrockets because people know exactly what they need to do and how far along they are.

Many professions are still tracking PD on paper

I still meet organisations that rely on handwritten logs, paper certificates, personal notebooks, and ad-hoc spreadsheets to track growth.

This creates issues at every level:

  • Professionals lose records or struggle to prove their progress
  • Administrators spend countless hours manually compiling reports
  • Governing bodies can’t get real-time visibility
  • Frameworks become difficult to update or enforce
  • Employers have no way to see who is meeting standards

In a world where technology accelerates everything, a paper-based system slows an entire profession down.

Imagine a better way — one simple connected framework

You define your PD requirements. Professionals connect directly to them. You can instantly see:

  • Who is on track
  • Who is behind
  • Who has created an annual plan
  • Who is exceeding expectations
  • Which competency areas need more development
  • Where to focus education and support resources

Professionals can:

  • Quickly log development activities
  • See which subject areas they are short on
  • Set goals for the year
  • Export transcripts in multiple formats
  • Feel confident that they’re meeting their obligations

That’s exactly why we built PD able; to make professional development not just trackable, but effective.

Because professionals who engage in their development become better professionals.

And when an entire workforce can easily engage with their PD framework, standards rise across the board. Safer buildings. Better teaching. More competent employees. More ethical practice. Every profession benefits when the people within it are supported to grow.

Our belief is simple:

Regulation should empower professionals, not burden them.
And the systems we use should make it effortless to uphold high standards.

PD Able was built to turn that belief into reality, for every profession, every governing body, and every practitioner who wants to do their best work.
