About Lawyers - Australia - New South Wales professional development

The NSW Lawyers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) System has been designed to support legal professionals in maintaining their practice standards and career growth. Built on the framework set by the Law Society of New South Wales, this system offers a straightforward path to CPD compliance while promoting ongoing professional learning.

PD able’s platform provides an interactive dashboard with charts, KPIs, and data tables that help track your progress. It highlights completed learning, identifies gaps, and supports planning for the year ahead. Behind the dashboard sits a powerful environment for logging CPD activities, managing your professional development plan (PDP), accessing learning resources, and more.

SYSTEM SUMMARY

To maintain their practising certificate, NSW lawyers must complete 10 CPD units each year between 1 April and 31 March.
This includes at least 1 unit in each of the four mandatory areas:

  • Ethics and professional responsibility
  • Practice management and business skills
  • Professional skills
  • Substantive law

Activities can be self-assessed and include seminars, online programs, legal research, writing, postgraduate study, and committee participation. Most interactive activities are uncapped, while some (e.g. private audio-visual study) have caps.
Lawyers are required to retain records of their CPD for at least three years, and the Law Society may conduct random audits to verify compliance.

A family of systems for lawyers across Australia

PD able offers tailored CPD systems for lawyers in each Australian state, including:

Each system is customised to meet jurisdictional requirements, and lawyers transferring between states can easily retain and carry forward their CPD history.

REVIEW

This CPD system for NSW lawyers empowers individuals to take ownership of their learning while staying compliant with the legal profession’s standards. With the right tools and guidance, NSW lawyers can meet their obligations—and go beyond them.

Ethics and professional responsibility

Practical legal ethics for lawyers refers to the set of principles and standards that govern the professional conduct of lawyers in their practice. These guidelines ensure that lawyers uphold the law, their professional integrity, and the interests of their clients, while maintaining fairness and justice in the legal system. Legal ethics covers both the duties and responsibilities lawyers have toward their clients, the courts, and society as a whole.

Activities that increase your knowledge of Confidentiality, Competence, Integrity and Honesty, Duty of Loyalty, Professionalism, Zealous Representation, Fairness and Justice or Compliance with Laws and Regulations:

Practical legal ethics is not only about following these rules but also involves making difficult decisions in real-world situations. Lawyers must navigate complex moral and professional dilemmas to ensure they maintain ethical standards while fulfilling their duties to clients and the justice system.

Practice management and business skills

Practice management and business skills for lawyers refer to the non-legal aspects of running a successful law practice. These skills are crucial for managing both the business and operational side of a legal career

Record activities that improve your knowledge in Client Management; Time Management, Financial Management, Marketing and Business Development, Team Leadership and Staff Management, Technology and Tools or Compliance and Risk Management.

These skills help lawyers operate their practices smoothly, ensuring profitability, client satisfaction, and sustainable growth.

Professional skills

Professional skills for lawyers refer to the core abilities and competencies necessary for effective and ethical legal practice. These skills are critical for providing high-quality legal services, maintaining client relationships, and upholding the standards of the profession.

Record activities that improve your professional skills such as Legal Research and Analysis, Communication, Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking, Negotiation, Advocacy and Litigation Skills,
Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Client Management and Time Management and Organization

These skills help lawyers deliver quality legal services, ensure professional integrity, and adapt to the changing demands of the legal industry.

Substantive law

Substantive law refers to the body of law that defines the rights, duties, and obligations of individuals and entities. It is concerned with the actual legal relationships and rights people have in society, such as the right to own property, the right to enter contracts, or the duty to comply with certain regulations. For a lawyer, substantive law provides the foundational framework for advising clients, preparing legal arguments, and representing them in court.

This can be any activity that improves your knowledge in substantive law such as Rights and Duties, Legal Relationships, Criminal and Civil Law, Contract Law, Property Law, Tort Law, Family Law and Labor and Employment Law

For a lawyer, understanding substantive law is essential for providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, negotiating settlements, and representing clients in court or other legal forums.

Lawyers apply the principles of substantive law to help clients resolve legal issues by analyzing the facts of a case, interpreting relevant laws, and arguing for the best possible outcome based on those legal rights and obligations.
