About Lawyers - Australia - Tasmania professional development

The Tasmanian Lawyers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) System supports practitioners in maintaining expertise and regulatory compliance. Aligned with the Law Society of Tasmania’s CPD Scheme, it delivers a clear, practical path to meet obligations and professional growth.
PD able’s platform features an interactive dashboard with charts, KPIs, and data tables to track progress, spot learning gaps, and plan your CPD year. Behind the dashboard, users can log activities, run PDPs, access resources, and keep audit-ready records.

SYSTEM SUMMARY

Tasmanian lawyers must complete 10 CPD units per CPD year, which runs from 1 May to 30 April

  • Practical legal ethics
  • Practice management and business skills
  • Professional skills
  • Substantive law
  • Equality and wellbeing (new category from 2021) 
  • 1 unit per hour of interactive learning (seminars, workshops, webinars, etc.) – uncapped
  • 1 unit per hour of recorded/non-interactive learning – capped at 5 passive units per year
  • Other eligible activities include publishing legal articles, committee participation, and tertiary study, per LST guidelines 

No carry-over provisions noted.
Practitioners must keep written records of CPD activities and supporting documents for 3 years, and the Law Society conducts annual random audits.

Lawyers must navigate complex moral and professional dilemmas to ensure they maintain ethical standards while fulfilling their duties to clients and the justice system.

Practice management or business skills

Practice management and business skills for lawyers refer to the non-legal aspects of running a successful law practice. These skills are crucial for managing both the business and operational side of a legal career
