About Lawyers - Australia - South Australia professional development

The South Australian Lawyers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) System helps practitioners meet regulatory standards while fostering professional growth. Aligned with the Law Society of South Australia’s MCPD framework, it delivers an efficient and supportive path to compliance.

PD able’s tool includes an interactive dashboard with visuals and KPIs that monitor CPD progress, highlight gaps, and show where you're investing your development efforts. Beneath the surface, the platform lets you log activities, run PDPs, access learning resources, and maintain audit-ready documentation.

SYSTEM SUMMARY

To maintain your practising certificate in South Australia, you must complete 10 CPD units each year from 1 April to 31 March. This must include at least 1 unit in each of four required areas:

  • Practical legal ethics
  • Practice management or business skills
  • Professional skills
  • Bullying, discrimination and harassment

Each interactive hour (seminars, workshops, webinars, etc.) counts as 1 CPD unit. You may also claim 1 unit per hour for recorded or non-interactive activities, up to a maximum of 5 passive units per year.

  • Units earned in January–March can be carried forward to the next CPD year but cannot be counted twice.

Practitioners must maintain written records for 3 years, including details of each activity—name, date, provider, format, and units earned. The Law Society conducts annual random audits, and practitioners must produce records promptly upon request.

Topics

The following is a copy of the framework set out by: The Law Society of South Australia

Practical legal ethics

Practical legal ethics for lawyers refers to the set of principles and standards that govern the professional conduct of lawyers in their practice. These guidelines ensure that lawyers uphold the law, their professional integrity, and the interests of their clients, while maintaining fairness and justice in the legal system. Legal ethics covers both the duties and responsibilities lawyers have toward their clients, the courts, and society as a whole.

Activities that increase your knowledge of Confidentiality, Competence, Integrity and Honesty, Duty of Loyalty, Professionalism, Zealous Representation, Fairness and Justice or Compliance with Laws and Regulations:

Practical legal ethics is not only about following these rules but also involves making difficult decisions in real-world situations. Lawyers must navigate complex moral and professional dilemmas to ensure they maintain ethical standards while fulfilling their duties to clients and the justice system.

Practice management or business skills

Practice management and business skills for lawyers refer to the non-legal aspects of running a successful law practice. These skills are crucial for managing both the business and operational side of a legal career

Record activities that improve your knowledge in Client Management; Time Management, Financial Management, Marketing and Business Development, Team Leadership and Staff Management, Technology and Tools or Compliance and Risk Management.

These skills help lawyers operate their practices smoothly, ensuring profitability, client satisfaction, and sustainable growth.

Professional skills

Professional skills for lawyers refer to the core abilities and competencies necessary for effective and ethical legal practice. These skills are critical for providing high-quality legal services, maintaining client relationships, and upholding the standards of the profession.

Record activities that improve your professional skills such as Legal Research and Analysis, Communication, Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking, Negotiation, Advocacy and Litigation Skills,
Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Client Management and Time Management and Organization

These skills help lawyers deliver quality legal services, ensure professional integrity, and adapt to the changing demands of the legal industry.

Bullying, discrimination and harassment

Bullying, Discrimination, and Harassment (BDH) are serious issues that lawyers must be aware of, both in their professional and personal conduct, as well as in their interactions with clients, colleagues, and other individuals within the legal environment. Understanding these concepts and how they apply in a legal context is crucial for maintaining ethical and professional standards.

Record activities that mitigate against this topic like how to respond to and deal with BDH either as a witness or personally, reporting BDH - what to do when either experiencing or witnessing, providing support to someone experiencing BDH, setting up systems to combat BDH and create safe reporting environments, education on appropriate workplace conduct, writing or substantively editing articles for publishing in legal or non-legal publications and attending R U OK Day activities.
